Nautical all-stars Admirals Hard release their debut album Upon A Painted Ocean on Believers Roast. The 7-piece ensemble features members of bands as diverse as Cardiacs, Knifeworld, North Sea Radio Orchestra, Guapo, Stars In Battledress, William D Drake, Gong and Mediaeval Baebes.
The band was formed by Cornishman Andy Carne who, during a spell of exile in London, convinced fellow West Country ex-pats to help him bring new life to the music he'd been singing since childhood. These musicians, though largely involved in leftfield, experimental rock, shared Carne's love of traditional music. Using harmonium, hurdy-gurdy, melodeon, hammered dulcimer and 7 voices they made his vision a rousing reality.
After over 10 years of roof-raising gigs in London and the South West they have selected their most popular material for their debut recording. Upon A Painted Ocean is an authentic, committed and highly entertaining folk album of traditional songs, tunes and call-and-response sea shanties.
