Just because the UK is heading for economic Armageddon part two, it doesn't mean that everyone needs to grab a ukulele and write a protest song.Sometimes unadulterated escapism is as valid a response to a recession as righteous indignation. That would certainly appear to be the MO of Birmingham's Swim Deep.
Austin Williams (20) Tom Higgins (21) and Zachary Robinson (20) were most likely already dreaming of bigger and better things when they met whilst working in Morrisons. After bonding over a shared love of Skateboarding, Nirvana and Warpaint, the three began making music, playing shows and making a name for themselves with fellow Birmingham bands Peace and Troumaca.
Swim Deep songs seem to be solely concerned with beaches, girls and not wanting to be wherever you happen to be (not necessarily in that order). Most of the band's tracks are named after parts of California (somewhere the band have never been) whilst their sound is a weird but alluring amalgam of Surf rock, Grunge and Balearic pop.
'King City' is the band's debut single, released May 14th through Chess Club Records. With its memorable refrain of "F*ck your romance, I wanna pretend that Jenny lee Lindberg is my girlfriend" the song may or may not be a thinly veiled ode to the Warpaint bassist. When it first appeared online earlier this year it was swiftly picked up by the Abeano blog who said "the song instantly makes everything feel 100%; better than usual" and soon after peaked at number 3 on the Hype Machine chart picking up over 20,000 plays on Soundcloud.
Swim Deep will play a select series of shows to accompany the release of 'King City', culminating with various shows at appropriately enough,at this year's Great Escape Festival in Brighton.Watch this space for details.
